You’ve Got Mail!

The snow plow ripped my poor little mailbox off its post last Sunday. I bought the new mailbox and I thought about installing it on Monday. And I thought again on Tuesday. But finally, today, I decided to actually brave the cold winds and install the thing. Armed with a hammer and a cordless drill and dressed in plenty of layers, I braved the winter wind to install the mailbox.

Just in time too. The mailman arrived within the hour of putting up our new green mailbox. My husband didn’t think we should get a white one again, just in case the snow plow driver had mistaken it for snow last Sunday.

I’ll just say that it does matter where you put screws. If you put them in the wrong place, the door won’t work. That you should check to make sure that the heads of the screws you plan to use are indeed bigger than the predrilled holes, and that preferably, you should do that when you are still enjoying the warmth inside your home rather than making that discovery as your fingers go numb despite the gloves.

Also there is nothing more annoying than trying to remove old screws in the below zero wind chill only to discover the screw has been stripped. Needless to say, mindlessly hitting it with a hammer generates heat and releases anger, and removes said screw, all with a few well placed swings.

Welcome to my blog

Doesn’t that sound better if it’s said in an evil voice? It’s kind of like, “I want to suck your blood.” Of course, that really sounds like “I vant to suck ur blud.”

I now have a new mailbox (see earlier entry)! It’s in my van. Do you think the mailman will be able to find it there? I even have new stickers for it, but it’s too cold to put stickers on it. I keep trying to get the courage to brave the icy wind and install my new mailbox, but alas, I decided to create a blog instead. That’s how productive my day has been.

My mom will be thrilled with this new addition to my Web site. She complains when I don’t add anything new for a while. And this is so simple, you just point and shoot. Oh wait, that’s cameras. Anyway, it’s pretty simple to create a blog. Probably too simple. I found out even Dave Barry has a Web log. And then there’s Lani’s blog. And since Dave and Lani have one, I have to have one too. Now my mom’s going to want to know who Dave and Lani are. (Mom, Dave Barry writes a humor column for the Miami Herald. Lani writes a humor column too.)

I’m sure Shelley will have her own Web log soon. (Now, Shelley, my mom knows. Although if you want a really good laugh, ask my mom to say “Divnich.”)

My son is trying to force feed me Whoppers. He doesn’t realize that force isn’t necessary. So, this post has been mostly about my mom. Well and me. But my mom likes that. :)

Later.

Oh dear, dear, dear,

Blustery days are so much more fun when you are watching them on the television rather than experiencing them in person. I will have you know that Pooh, Piglet and Tigger seem to have much more fun on blustery days than I ever imagined you could.

It’s cold out thar, Margaret!

(What is that song, “thar’s a hole in the bucket, dear ….? Is it Liza? and then who does Liza say? – random stray thought.)

OK, back on track. It’s snowing. Lots and lots of snow. You can’t see the footsteps from this morning. You can’t see footsteps from an hour ago.

But what really has me worried is what will the mailman do? The big mean nasty county snowplow driver slammed into my poor little mailbox with all of its might, ripping the dear plastic thing literally in half. Where will my precious mail go? Will I get mail? Will my mailman be a dear and decide to forego the warm interior of his vehicle to walk my mail to my door? Will I being a nice homeowner, watch for said mailman and rush out to greet him? Or will I just hope my mail will somehow magically appear on my desktop just like its electronic counterpart.

Anyone taking bets on how long the next mailbox lasts? This one made it one and a half winters. So far, I think the snow plow is ahead and my bank account is behind. (Just a note, if I complain, the road commission will happily give me a new (cheap) mailbox and they’ll even install it for me.) Speaking of that, it just might be worth it since I wouldn’t have to get out in the cold (and neither would dh) to install a new one. Or maybe I should just give it up and rent a PO box and save my precious mail. Last time there was actually mail in the box when it was so rudely ripped from its post.
