Time for Dinner?

amandacatcherTonight was the first Little League game of the season, and it proves to be the first of many nights that I will be spending at a ball field and trying to figure out how to feed my family sometime before 9 p.m.

Tonight, we ate at about 8:30 p.m. if you don’t count the sandwiches I made three of them eat before going to the field. The game lasted until after 7:30, and it was 8 p.m. before we even managed to get home. Of course, I had to immediately leave again to go pick up the oldest from her away game; there was a bit of a communication glitch there.

Tomorrow is the second game of the Little League season. It is an away game, and for the second year in a row, Autumn (my oldest) will spend her birthday at a sister’s softball game. I plan on taking sloppy joe stuff in a crock pot along with my plug-in converter that turns my car lighter plug-in into a regular outlet. That way we can eat dinner at a normal time just before the game starts. Cake and ice cream, however, will wait until this weekend.

I have entered all of the games into our family calendar for the next two months, and I would have to say that my evenings are booked for quite a while. At least one child has a game every single week night through June 22 and on some nights, like this Wednesday, there are two or (as in Wednesday’s case) three games all at once in three different cities.

On Wednesday, May 20, Autumn will be playing softball in Kalkaska, Amanda will be playing in Roscommon, and Justin will be playing in Houghton Lake. Luckily, Autumn’s game is a high school event, so she has transportation. I’ll have to tag a grandma to get Justin to his game, which leaves me taking Amanda to Roscommon.

Oh wait; it looks like I do have ONE week night free. It is Friday, June 5, which is Maxine’s birthday. She wants to have a party, so I guess that night isn’t really free either.

It wouldn’t be quite so bad if the temperature would warm up, but it is cold sitting outside in Northern Michigan right now. Last Wednesday, I sat through a scrimmage with the three girls; (two on one team and one on the other). There was a steady drizzle through most of it, and just when I thought it was getting better, it would get worse.

I like going to my kids’ games but looking at our schedule for the next couple of months is daunting.

Light my Fire

I am camping. Really. The roughing-it kind of camping minus the tent and sleeping bags. That is, I’m sleeping in my camper, we are parked next to a gorgeous lake, which doesn’t sound like roughing it until you realize there is no electricity or water hook-ups available in this campground. It is rustic.

It is also close to home, which is where I really am right this moment. Home. Autumn’s clothes are in the dryer since she went from kayak camp to family camp and demanded a shower and clean clothes. I am home because I’m teaching, which makes it impossible to go very long without the internet. Plus we have three dogs at home that we did not take camping. This means we come home often to feed and water them. It is a good thing the campground is only about 15 minutes away.

Tonight I roasted marshmallows on an open flame and became all gooey as I helped a number of kids (I lost count) build s’mores. Yum. This camping over the holiday is a family tradition — one that brings four generations of Sherwoods together. As Autumn noted yesterday, there are only 14 people camping in this campground right now, and we are related to seven of them.

The number of campers dwindled considerably when the price went from $10 a night to $20 a night. The high price of gas also hurts. But I am enjoying the camping even though I haven’t been at the campground very much. Between Little League and work, I spend large parts of my day away from the campground.

Little League is now done and over for three of the four children, but Amanda is in the middle of her all-stars games. The games are in Tawas. We have traveled there two days so far (Saturday and Sunday). We still have to travel there Monday and Wednesday. And I know it seems like I just did a 180 on topic, but the Little League stuff DOES have something to do with the title.

There has been some vandalism at the local school. A porta-potty was burned down. The next day, someone burned down a shed by the girls’ softball field. This is the field where my kids play. The shed was right next to a set of bleachers, which was also damaged. The shed was a total loss. I did snap a picture, but I don’t have my camera with me right now. The shed was where the equipment was kept like the umpire’s stuff, extra bases, a pitching machine and other stuff. I haven’t heard officially, but it was definitely arson because the shed didn’t have any electricity hooked up to it. It is a shame. Why?

OK, it’s after midnight, and I’ve been camping. What did you expect? The answer should have been “not much.” But hey, I blogged.

All-Star Summer

School is out, and you would think this would mean lazy hazy days of rest and relaxation for the children.

But you forgot about the insane person who signed them up for Little League. Four kids + three teams translates to Every Night of the Week. (Did you like how what started as math changed to language? I wish I could do that with all my math.)

In case you haven’t figured it out, the insane person would be me.

I forget during the long winter what Little League is like. Last night two daughters played in Grayling in the rain. Yes, I said Grayling. Did I neglect to mention that Little League games for the three oldest are happening in Houghton Lake, Grayling and Roscommon? Technically, we are in the Houghton Lake league, but it is a 13 mile drive, one way, for us to the Houghton Lake field. Grayling and Roscommon? You don’t want to know. At least they dropped Mio from the schedule this year. Oh, we still play Mio. We just do it in Grayling.

In all fairness, when we signed up for this, gas prices were still hovering around $3 a gallon. That’s right. Way back in the good old days of March. Grayling is approximately 30 miles from here. Roscommon is about the same if you were a bird, but there are these two pesky lakes that make you go way out around to get to Rosommon, so it might be about 40 miles. I can’t tell you exactly because I don’t want to know. (Isn’t the approximations bad enough?)

This Little League schedule creates huge negotiations. On Monday, Steve and I had everything down to a science. We managed to get everyone and everything to Roscommon on time (5:30 p.m.), which is huge since Steve works until 5 p.m. in Houghton Lake. One hour drive there and back home later + 2.45 hours of game time + eating free pizza (I had a coupon) in the car while driving there = watching your daughter play in the outfield twice for about 10 minutes total/no batting. In all fairness, what was supposed to be a double-header turned into a 7-inning combo game, which ended up with a “mercy” finish in the fifth inning. Autumn’s team won, but we didn’t get to see her play very much.

But it is almost the end of June, which means the season is almost over. Except it isn’t. Although the calendar says it is June, it was 49 degrees AND raining last night as we watched Maxine and Amanda play. That doesn’t sound like summer to me. Amanda played every inning, and Maxine sat out two at her own request because she was cold. Despite the miserable weather, I enjoyed watching the game. But this wasn’t meant to be a rant about June’s crappy weather. It was supposed to be leading up to something….

An announcement of sorts. The Little League season has been extended.

That’s right. Amanda made the all-star team. This means we have to prove residency and age. It requires formal documentation. I have had to show less documentation to get thousands of dollars in loans. I managed to gather the birth certificate (must be original) plus four pieces of “official” documents to prove our residency. Except it doesn’t. We use a PO box, and all of the “official” documents: bank statement, property tax notice, phone bill and insurance document fail to list our street address. We need to find other official documents that list our street address.

It sounds simple, right? Except you forget where I live. Let me remind you. I live in Missaukee County. My kids attend Houghton Lake Community Schools, which is primarily made up of Roscommon County. We have a Merritt phone number, and a Lake City address. This is why we use the PO box. We live less than 5 miles from the Merritt post office, and more than 15 miles from the Lake City post office. Technically, our PO box address is a Merritt address, and our street address is a Lake City address. Officially, we use the Merritt PO address along with our street address. It makes proving residency just a tiny bit of a headache. People tend to get confused when you switch cities on them. (You think?)

I’m not sure what position Amanda will play on the all-star team. She likes to play catcher, and she is good at it. We’ll see. That is, if I can prove where we live (and have lived since 1994). It should be easy, right? Why do I keep hearing that evil laugh?

Thanks for playing.

Sister versus Sister

At least this sister-off doesn’t involve blood and hair-pulling.

Please leave a message….

…and I will return your call when Little League season is over.

It is spring time in northern Michigan, which means my life has undergone a major shift — I am no longer home in the evenings because I am off at running at various baseball and softball fields. The Little League season has began.

It started slowly. Justin’s first practice was Friday, and we went. We had not yet heard from the girls’ coaches. On Saturday, we learned Autumn had practice on Sunday. On Sunday around noon, we learned Maxine and Amanda would have practice at 2 p.m. I spent most of Sunday afternoon.

Today, Autumn and Amanda have track practice. Tomorrow, Autumn and Amanda have a track meet, Justin has practice at 7 p.m. and Maxine (and Amanda) have practice at 7 p.m. There goes Tuesday night.

Wednesday, Autumn has practice. Thursday is a school dance for Autumn and Amanda while Friday sees a track meet for Amanda and Autumn and practice for Justin. Autumn has another Sunday practice. Realize too, that these practices do not happen at the same place.

Plus it is the second to last week of the spring semester. Finals are next week, so I am doing a lot of grading and reviewing of papers. Today, one of my classes is turning in their research paper. It shall be a fun week.
