Thanking the Academy, Part Two

It turns out, I was nominated for not just one but TWO awards by the amazing Sheila of ThisOneBody. This is my chance to thank her and to recognize some other great bloggers out there.

The rules of this nomination are:

Nominees, in order to accept this award you must:
-Thank and link back to the person who awarded you
-Write seven random things about yourself.
-Award seven other awesome and inspiring bloggers.

Without further ado, here are seven random things about me:

  1. I have made a career out of writing and teaching writing, but English was NOT my highest ACT score (college application test).
  2. So what did I score highest in? In fact, I scored a 29 out of 30 in this category. It was Science.
  3. Most summers, my parents and I would load up our camper and travel around the country visiting relatives including my older siblings. We would return back home in time for me to start school in the fall.
  4. This means I have been to almost every state in our nation by car, which is a great way to travel and see the country. Although, I probably spent more of this traveling time with my nose in a book than my mother would have liked me to.
  5. I have two brothers and two sisters who are 11, 13, 14 and 15 years older than me. As a result, I became an aunt when I was only 5.5 years old.
  6. When she began talking, I refused to acknowledge anything my niece said unless she called me AUNT Linda. It worked, and when I was a teenager, I couldn’t get her to undo it.
  7. When I was a kid, my bedroom was an attic room. I would refuse to go into my room until my mom could go upstairs with before me and turn on a light for me. This continued until I was in my early teens (12, 13, 14). And not about me but a testament to what a great mom I have, she would do this for me EVERY night.

And the bloggers I want to award are the following:

Kiwords

Kirida

AttentionDeficitWhatever

Buckeyes in the Sun

AngelaGilesKlocke

LifeWithBoys

TiredMama

VanishingVixen

(And yes, I realize this is 8 blogs and not 7. I’m an English major; you do the math, next time.)

Cheater Cheater

I have unofficially decided to participate in NanoBlogMo (I’m not sure of the official name; that is how unofficially I am participating.)

Basically, I am trying to post every WEEKday in November with a few weekend posts as a bonus. It is as close as I can get to Nanowrimo, which is an insane plan to write something like 1500 words a day for the month of November. I don’t mean to suggest people are insane for doing it. I do mean to suggest I would go insane if I tried. I know people who do it every year, and they do it well. I am not one of those people. I’ve never even TRIED.

So I am doing the daily blog thing. Sort of.

I am also cheating at the daily blog thing. For instance, when I miss a day, I go back and write a post (like this one) and then slip it into the day I missed.

This post is going to be dated Tuesday, Nov. 22. But I really wrote it Friday, Nov. 25. Oh well. I am counting it anyway.

I am going to win at NanoBlogMo even if I do cheat to do it. ;-)

So Pretty and So MINE!

Disclosure: I won a Kindle Fire in a contest. I found out TODAY, and I am more than a little excited about that. I was not paid for this post.I was not asked to write this post. I am just excited about winning because I love my Kindle. This post isn’t really an ad, but it does express a lot of love for my Kindle (the one that came out in 2010 that my hubby gave me for our anniversary last year) and excitement about the new Kindle Fire that I will be getting (the one I won). That’s right. I love my Kindle. In the event of a house fire, my Kindle is high on the list of things to grab. It is behind living things like hubby, children and dogs, but it is ahead of the daughter’s turtle. It is a lot lighter than the shelves of books that I would grab if I could but probably couldn’t because fire moves fast.

Last year, in September, for my wedding anniversary, my husband bought me a Kindle 3. I love him, and I loved my new Kindle. It was (and is) awesome. I loved it so much that I even got crafty in order to protect it. And it’s more than a year later, and I am still writing about my Kindle and how much I love it and how much I love my awesome hubby (not in that order).

The only problem was that my children (specifically my oldest and youngest child) would steal my Kindle. They wanted to read it. My youngest daughter also started stealing my Kindle. This made it difficult for ME to use my Kindle.

For my oldest daughter’s birthday, she received a Kindle. I now had my own Kindle more often PLUS her siblings sometimes “borrowed” her Kindle instead of mine.

I love my Kindle. I read books everywhere. I also listen to audiobooks loaded onto my Kindle while I drive, and I drive a lot. It is a well-used electronic device and probably one of my favorites. It is just awesome.

I didn’t think there was a way to make it better although I tried when I bought it pretty skins from DecalGal and more pretty covers.

My husband has even become jealous of it a time or two.

Recently, he was asking me about possible Christmas presents. I mentioned I’d like a Kindle Fire. He didn’t think that would be a very good present because I’d know about it (I am constantly in the Amazon account). What else did I want?

I wasn’t sure. I really wanted to check out the new Kindle, but I also love my current Kindle. I’d have to get back to him.

And then just the other day I was browsing through web sites on Blogher, and I saw a contest to win a Kindle Fire. It also told me about a new social media site called chime.in. I joined chime.in and entered the contest.

People followed me on chime.in almost immediately, and there isn’t anything really to follow yet. Still. I had followers, which is just another word for minions, right?

And then today, I received an email. I had won the Kindle Fire. I pinched myself. I updated my status on facebook. I called and texted my hubby. I took a phone call from my daughter that confirmed yes, my status update was real and yes, I did win. And then I went and read the email again (it still existed!) and realized I was supposed to respond. (Duh!) So, I did. And I am now going to anxiously wait for my Kindle Fire to arrive in the mail sometime after they are released on November 15. :-)

My daughter asked me if this meant my son would be getting my current Kindle. I hesitated. I love my Kindle. Many of the things I love about it are things that I don’t think are features on the Kindle Fire. For instance, it has a really long battery life. It also doesn’t have any glare when I read outside or if my eyes hurt. I’m not sure I’m willing to pass it on to someone else. Can’t I keep both? I’ll let him borrow it sometimes.

The great thing is that there is still a contest sponsored by Blogher and Chime.in, and three more Kindle Fires will be given away over the next three weeks. You can win one too.

This is the contest I won: http://surrenderdorothy.typepad.com/surrender_dorothy/2011/11/lets-talk-blogs-to-books-and-give-away-a-kindle-fire-why-not.html

Here are links to the current and upcoming contests:

  • Tuesday, November 8 – Monday November 14 — win with Stephanie O’Dea Enter here!
  • Tuesday, November 15 – Monday November 21 — win with Momo Fali
  • Tuesday, November 22 – Monday November 28 — win with Sassymonkey

And here is the announcement that I won the Kindle Fire: http://chime.in/user/BlogHer/chime/71726767491305472

If you go to that last link, and it says someone else’s name instead of mine, I finally pinched hard enough to wake myself up. If you see my name, it means I’m not dreaming. :)

Blogging Blame?

A high school teacher made the national news after her personal blog was outed by her students and/or parents of her students. Although the teacher kept her identity hidden and never mentioned the school or students by name, she did write blogs where she criticized her students. The school suspended the teacher while it investigated.

Her story, her lawyer argues, could cause a chilling effect on teachers everywhere. It will keep teachers from blogging, he argues. Of 84 posts, the teacher says only 24 mentioned teaching and some just briefly. And it is only the scandalous posts that are being mentioned, she adds.

Why does anyone think that “anonymous” is really anonymous?

I truly think someone needs to develop an educational program to help older people learn the impact online posts of any type can have unintentionally. People need to become more savvy. Of course, it is a class that can help students as well.

I don’t blog anonymously. I thought about it briefly, and I even bought a URL, but ultimately decided I didn’t feel comfortable doing it. That blog was going to talk about my struggles with managing money at a time when I finally am getting it under control (again). The thing is, there is so much about handling money that is unpredictable. People sign loans promising to pay and then the economy changes and jobs are lost or change. It is scary stuff. My secret URL, by the way, was MissManaged.com, which doesn’t exist. I just bought it, and I liked the cleverness of the title. I only posted once or twice before deciding it wasn’t for me..

I also don’t blog about my co-workers or work or students in negative ways. I am careful about what I say online. Even in my recent post about my crash with a semi, I was aware that people like my insurance company might read it. I didn’t want to say anything that was outright wrong without making it clear it was my feelings and not fact.

For that matter, I’m careful about what I say anywhere. I don’t generally complain. I also tend to not discuss religion or politics. This might have to do with my journalism background.

As a journalist, I know how hard it can be for people to realize that what they say might be put out there for all to hear.
