Laptop Living

In January 2006, I purchased my first laptop; I was finally liberated from my desk. I could take my computer wherever I went (and I do), and I could sit in the living room with my family while still working rather than being closed off in my office. I loved it.

And then summer came, and I was wearing shorts, and I have to say the bottom of this little laptop gets HOT. Plus it made unsightly little laptop feet marks on my lap. Laptops it seems are not really lap-top friendly. Plus I don’t tend to sit very well when I use my laptop. I sit crooked, so the laptop sits crookedly on my lap. This is probably not good for the laptop.

Plus, when you work in the living room, sometimes you tend to leave your laptop perched on the side of the couch with a cord stretched across an area that is hardly ever used for a walking path BUT is a magnet as soon as you leave your laptop perched. This is what caused the first initial crack in my old laptop that eventually led to its temporary and finally permanent replacement.

So, I have been looking at ways to fix this summer-time problem and hopefully extend the life of my current laptop. I finally purchased a laptop table with a split-top. Part of the top tilts to make it easy to type while the other side remains flat for a mouse and/or books. The picture on the box shows a drink there, but I don’t think so. It basically looks like a shorter-version of a hospital table.

It seemed perfect. Except most of my living room furniture is not meant to work with a laptop table. The living room furniture doesn’t have the space underneath it to allow the table to slide under it. And the table has to be able to slide under it in order to get it the right distance away to work. I’ve found a couple of options, and I really like it when I decide to work in my bedroom while perched on my bed. My lap doesn’t overheat, and I don’t get those little feet marks in my legs anymore.

Now I just need to get something that will make it easier to see my screen when I want to work outside in the sun. Maybe next summer.

The Business of Blogging

I received notice in my inbox this morning that a comment had been left on my Fat Man’s Daughter blog. Then I found the EXACT same comment at my other blog (this one). Gee, do you think it is really spam?

I know that some businesses pay a lot of money to have people comment on blogs or mention their company on blogs. I thought I’d do FreeCreditReport.com a favor and mention them (although the mention is not favorable) on my blog.

I confess. I like the commercials for this site. The catchy jingle, sad looking car and the pirate’s uniform snagged me. I logged on to get my free credit report.

I signed up, answered security questions, and I was refused entry. I never did get that free credit report. I was frustrated, but it wasn’t a big deal. I didn’t have a dying need to access my free report. I logged off and forgot about it.

Five days later I received a letter with a code that if I wanted to try again, I’d need to log in. This time, the letter promised, I really WOULD get access to my free credit report. I threw it away without even trying.

Yesterday, I logged onto my bank and saw a pending charge of $14.95 by C*CE CIC Credit Report, or some such thing. There was an account number that was really an 800 number. I called my husband to ask if he’d done it. Nope. I called my bank. They clued me in that the account number was an 800 number. I called the 800 number.

The lady who answered was nice and had a southern accent. She asked me my name. I explained my problem. She said, “If you give me your credit card number and/or your social security number, I can take care of it for you.”

Why, yes! I would love to give these things to you. After all, it isn’t as if I am calling to already dispute a trumped-up charge….. Needless to say, I declined. She was able to locate my information through my e-mail address. Imagine that!

It turns out freecreditreport.com defines free a little bit differently than me. I define free as in “we won’t charge you for giving you something.” They define free as “We won’t give you anything but frustration and then seven-days later we will charge you $14.95 for something you never received.”

The lady I talked to was able to pull up my account and see that yes, I had not actually accessed the account. I had not received anything, and pretty much all I did was sign up. AND YET, they were charging me.

She did cancel my account. The charge was going to go through, and I was assured I would be reimbursed in “7 to 10 days.”

I explained (very nicely) that this method of doing business did not make me happy. If they can see I didn’t ever get anything, primarily because THEY stopped me, they should not charge my account. It made me think this was their normal way of operation, which seems to be SCAM!

And there’s my recommendation for today — stay away from freecreditreport.com, which is operated by CreditExpress (I think that’s the name), which also operates several other of these types of sites.

Library Thing

I recently joined Library Thing, which is this online web site where you can log books you own and then compare your books to books owned by other people, as well as get recommendations. It’s kind of cool.

Part of joining LibraryThing is getting a widget to go on your blog that will randomly display books from your personal library. You will find mine if you scroll down, way down, all the way to the bottom of the right column.

I have not logged in every book I own, but I have logged in about 50 or so. Not all at once, by the way.

This post is brought to you by a grad student with a deadline who is procrastinating.

A new dynamic toy!

I was tired of my old web site design. I wanted something new but simple too. I think I finally have it, although I admit the graphics take a bit to load. Lindasherwood Check out the preview below.

The big change is the page is dynamic. Everytime you click on it, a random photo from a selection of 14 (at this point) appears. I selected 14 pictures of my immediate family. In some cases, the photos had other people in the background. In those cases, I blurred the background. There’s one photo with Amanda and I surrounded by swirly color that I really love even if Amanda is frowning at the camera.

So check it out and see what you think. It should work on all of the pages except my blog page. My website address is http://www.lindasherwood.com

I am really proud of myself for this. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for playing.

I was going to blog, but…

The printing company where the college newspaper gets published just called. There’s a problem with the files. It seems my tiffs aren’t tiffs and the fonts didn’t embed.

I checked those files personally AND I know all of the tiffs were tiffs, and I also know I selected embed fonts. I also know they were CMYK. I don’t know why it didn’t work, but I am suspecting a problem with the program loaded on that particular computer.

I started to say as much to the print shop person, but she interrupted me to say, “Just because it’s a tiff doesn’t mean it’s CMYK.” Well, if she would hush just a moment more, I could finish my sentence and say I think there is a problem with the program because all of the settings were right.

I let her know it would be at least an hour before I can get to Kirtland. The roads are icy, and I live at least 40 minutes away to begin with.

Her reply, “I was afraid of that.” Yeah, me too. Argh.

So much for not having to go anywhere today. Hopefully the trip will prove to be uneventful and worthwhile. I’m waiting on a new edition of a textbook for one of the classes I teach. Hopefully it will be in today.

Still, I can’t complain about how my day started. I had a nice start to my day before 8 a.m. It was only after 8 a.m. that things went down the tubes. I’m off.

Thanks for playing.
