The Anti-Thankful Post

Everyone is posting their reasons for being thankful, and I decided I needed to do something a bit different.

I’m going to whine about having to share.

It hasn’t been that long since my new Kindle Fire arrived. I have barely had any time to play with it, and some of my children hadn’t even touched it yet.

I made the mistake of bringing it with me to the family celebration. In no time, my children and cousins were using my Kindle Fire to do things like play suduko and solitaire.

I reluctantly allowed this. In that I said “yes,” but I really wanted to grab my toy and take it home while screaming “nnnoooo!” and “mmmiiinnnneee.”

I have since reclaimed my Kindle Fire and told all children that it is charging. I feel better. Especially after I cleaned off all of the fingerprints.

Children are Cute, right?

My children have been crazy busy. They have also been very emotional, bratty and filthy. If my daughters do not clean their room soon, I am going to have to take drastic measures because the state of their room is messing with my mind.

The other day, my oldest daughter asked if her boyfriend could come over if he managed to find a ride to our house. I said yes. He came over. His ride? My daughter went and picked him up. This was not what I had in mind when I said yes. I’m not falling for it again this weekend.

Yesterday, I was in the middle of teaching my students when my cell phone vibrated. I glanced at it and noticed my youngest daughter was calling me. I checked the time and thought she should still be in school. I ignored the call and continued talking to my students, but when my phone rang again immediately, I had to excuse myself to take it. I was worried that a call in the middle of the day meant something was very very wrong.

I answered the call to find out that the school was without power. That was not the emergency I had in mind. Within minutes, my other daughter was calling me. So why were they calling me? They wanted a parent to call the school, so they could leave early. I was not impressed.

By the way, I did not take the second daughter’s call. I only found out the reason why as I was talking to my husband later that day. They had called him as well, and he had called the school for them.

(Off topic, but I am realizing it is very hard to eat peanut butter while wearing braces because the peanut butter gets mixed in the wires.)

Today is Veteran’s Day, and the children needed dress clothes to wear to the ceremony. I bought two outfits of my middle child because she is picky. I bought one outfit for my youngest child because she is not picky. The youngest child loved her outfit. The middle child tried on numerous outfits, including some she owned and the ones I purchased, declared something wrong with every. single. one. of. them., and then whined about how she didn’t have anything to wear.

I was not amused.

Needless to say, hubby and I got a great laugh over her angst. Somehow she managed to find something to wear today. Amazing.

Plus, my youngest daughter updated her facebook status, and it made me laugh out loud. Here it is:

New Family Photo

Sherwood Family 2011

This fall, we went out into the woods to get firewood. While we were there, I loved the way these beech trees sort of created a natural grandstand. I decided to take the family photo there.

In back we have Steve and Linda (me). In the front row, the children are arranged in birth order (L to R): Autumn (17), Amanda (16), Maxine (14) and Justin (12). Also pictured are two of our three dogs: Lily (the black minipin) and Zeus (the giant chocolate lab). Not pictured: Spike (the beagle) because he would have run away, and we didn’t want to lose him. :)

Hauling Wood

This weekend, the husband woke everyone up fairly early, fed them breakfast and then made them trek into the woods.

There he operated a chainsaw. When he was done cutting up wood-stove size pieces, it was the job of the rest of us to pick it up and put it into the truck.

This happened two days in a row. On the second day, I was not moving as fast as I had been on the first day. The squatting and the lifting and the squatting and the lifting had taken its toll on my body, and I was stiff and sore. It didn’t help that I had also done a workout that targeted these exact areas.

On the way back home the second day, we were listening to a song about fishing. My son commented about what he thought the song was about, and he got it.

JT: This is about a dad making memories with his kid.

Linda: Yep. Just like what your dad and I are doing with you guys right now. You think you are just hauling wood, but we are making memories and connecting with you guys.

JT: No, we’re just your child labor.

This weekend was absolutely gorgeous. The temps were in the 80s, and the fall colors are brilliant. It was a gorgeous time to be out in the woods. I really want to go back to that area and get a family photo of all of us posing on some giant beech trees that were cut down. The way they are currently lying on the ground is a makeshift grandstand, and the colors behind them are fantastic.

Memories.

Darling Daughter

The phone call came around noon. It was my daughter. We didn’t have power at home and did I know that? I didn’t.*

The second call came a bit later. Faced with no power, she had decided to start working on dinner. Her first step was to inventory our cupboards.

Did you know, she asked me over the phone, that there are things in our cupboard from 2002? They were boxed products that I rarely use like shake and bake.

She threw the old items out and started grilling me about what she should make for dinner.

That’s right. My oldest child made dinner for the family last night, and it was awesome.

Not only did she cook dinner (chicken breasts, awesome mashed potatoes and salad), she cooked TWO blueberry pies, something my children have been requesting me to do for quite a while.

It was great to come home to food rather than to a hungry family.

And this has become a wonderful habit. You see, the oldest child is on a special schedule at school. She only has classes until around 11:30 a.m. Two days a week, she travels out to the community college for a 4 hour class. The other three days, she is free to put some variety into her schedule.

Some days she decides to stay at school and serves as a student aide for a teacher there. Other days, she comes home and does her laundry and cooks our dinner. Yummy.

On those days, she typically calls me at work and asks various questions about recipes.

I’ve found myself pulling out my cookbooks and finding recipes online. As part of my weight loss journey, I am trying to eat better and smarter. I’m no longer willing to give up taste for convenience. If I can’t eat very much, I want what I eat to taste very good.

The other day, I made taco soup, which was awesome. I found the recipe at allrecipes.com for simple taco soup. Someone else mentioned BLT soup is also good. I’ll have to try it.

Soups seem great for fall/winter days, and I don’t think I made nearly enough before. Do you have a favorite soup recipe? If so, please share it.

*About the no power thing…. As soon as she let me know, I logged into my electric company’s web site. As I thought, I had not forgotten to pay the bill. It was current without anything being past due. I then called and reported the power outage. Power was restored within an hour or so. Isn’t it funny how when the power goes out, the first reaction is “did you pay the bill?”
