So Pretty and So MINE!

Disclosure: I won a Kindle Fire in a contest. I found out TODAY, and I am more than a little excited about that. I was not paid for this post.I was not asked to write this post. I am just excited about winning because I love my Kindle. This post isn’t really an ad, but it does express a lot of love for my Kindle (the one that came out in 2010 that my hubby gave me for our anniversary last year) and excitement about the new Kindle Fire that I will be getting (the one I won). That’s right. I love my Kindle. In the event of a house fire, my Kindle is high on the list of things to grab. It is behind living things like hubby, children and dogs, but it is ahead of the daughter’s turtle. It is a lot lighter than the shelves of books that I would grab if I could but probably couldn’t because fire moves fast.

Last year, in September, for my wedding anniversary, my husband bought me a Kindle 3. I love him, and I loved my new Kindle. It was (and is) awesome. I loved it so much that I even got crafty in order to protect it. And it’s more than a year later, and I am still writing about my Kindle and how much I love it and how much I love my awesome hubby (not in that order).

The only problem was that my children (specifically my oldest and youngest child) would steal my Kindle. They wanted to read it. My youngest daughter also started stealing my Kindle. This made it difficult for ME to use my Kindle.

For my oldest daughter’s birthday, she received a Kindle. I now had my own Kindle more often PLUS her siblings sometimes “borrowed” her Kindle instead of mine.

I love my Kindle. I read books everywhere. I also listen to audiobooks loaded onto my Kindle while I drive, and I drive a lot. It is a well-used electronic device and probably one of my favorites. It is just awesome.

I didn’t think there was a way to make it better although I tried when I bought it pretty skins from DecalGal and more pretty covers.

My husband has even become jealous of it a time or two.

Recently, he was asking me about possible Christmas presents. I mentioned I’d like a Kindle Fire. He didn’t think that would be a very good present because I’d know about it (I am constantly in the Amazon account). What else did I want?

I wasn’t sure. I really wanted to check out the new Kindle, but I also love my current Kindle. I’d have to get back to him.

And then just the other day I was browsing through web sites on Blogher, and I saw a contest to win a Kindle Fire. It also told me about a new social media site called chime.in. I joined chime.in and entered the contest.

People followed me on chime.in almost immediately, and there isn’t anything really to follow yet. Still. I had followers, which is just another word for minions, right?

And then today, I received an email. I had won the Kindle Fire. I pinched myself. I updated my status on facebook. I called and texted my hubby. I took a phone call from my daughter that confirmed yes, my status update was real and yes, I did win. And then I went and read the email again (it still existed!) and realized I was supposed to respond. (Duh!) So, I did. And I am now going to anxiously wait for my Kindle Fire to arrive in the mail sometime after they are released on November 15. :-)

My daughter asked me if this meant my son would be getting my current Kindle. I hesitated. I love my Kindle. Many of the things I love about it are things that I don’t think are features on the Kindle Fire. For instance, it has a really long battery life. It also doesn’t have any glare when I read outside or if my eyes hurt. I’m not sure I’m willing to pass it on to someone else. Can’t I keep both? I’ll let him borrow it sometimes.

The great thing is that there is still a contest sponsored by Blogher and Chime.in, and three more Kindle Fires will be given away over the next three weeks. You can win one too.

This is the contest I won: http://surrenderdorothy.typepad.com/surrender_dorothy/2011/11/lets-talk-blogs-to-books-and-give-away-a-kindle-fire-why-not.html

Here are links to the current and upcoming contests:

  • Tuesday, November 8 – Monday November 14 — win with Stephanie O’Dea Enter here!
  • Tuesday, November 15 – Monday November 21 — win with Momo Fali

And here is the announcement that I won the Kindle Fire: http://chime.in/user/BlogHer/chime/71726767491305472

If you go to that last link, and it says someone else’s name instead of mine, I finally pinched hard enough to wake myself up. If you see my name, it means I’m not dreaming. :)

Braceface

It has been less than a week since I had braces installed on my upper teeth, and I am still getting used to them.

Yesterday was my first day teaching while wearing braces. Almost immediately after my first class started, I noticed that I was getting a build-up of drool in the corners of my mouth. My lips were making a lot of weird movements. I decided I needed to say something to the students.

It isn’t always obvious that I have braces since they are clear. A student towards the back of the room might not be able to see them. I didn’t want anyone to think I was giving them a dirty look as I made my weird facial expressions.

I also have a sore forming in the bottom right corner of my mouth — probably from the excess drool.

And last night, my husband said I was snoring. I blame the braces.

They are not comfortable, and it makes me wish I had more sympathy for my children. Autumn is almost done with her SECOND set of braces. Maxine and Justin are just starting their braces adventure. Maybe I can show them more sympathy now.

I don’t even have a full set of braces yet. My bottom teeth won’t be in braces until my next orthodontist appointment in January.

Since my braces were installed, I find I am not eating as much. During the school day, I don’t want to eat anything because I don’t want to be teaching with food in my teeth. I am very concerned about food being stuck in my braces. I am constantly checking. I am going to have to purchase a pocket mirror to keep in my school bag.

I’ll try to quit whining about them soon. ;-)

Pinterest: For Steve

I am in love with my husband, and I think of him frequently. I see things that I want to share with him or remind me of him, and it makes me smile or laugh. Most of these things I share with him, but some things are just silly.

To help keep track of those things, I made this page. I made the page knowing that my husband probably would never see it unless I made a point to share it with him. I have, but I’ve also added to it. This board at Pinterest.com is For Steve. Always.

Save Me

I commute about two hours a day for three days a week. To make the time go by faster, I listen to audio books.

My awesome husband replaced the radio in my car. The new one has a jack for an MP3 player, or in my case, for my Kindle. I listen to audio books fed through my car’s stereo system as I drive.

Right now, I am listening to a book called Save Me by Lisa Scottoline. It’s about a mother volunteering at a school when an explosion happens. She has to save her child’s bully before she can go save her daughter. The bully is later found injured, and the mom is made to be a villain.

It is an interesting story, but there are times I have to shut it off. I can only listen to the mothers who villify the woman for so long and then I have to listen to the radio for a bit. This isn’t normal for my audio-listening habits.

Today, I felt like I needed to yell save me.

I was driving to work. I was on a highway going about 70 miles per hour. It is morning traffic in northern Michigan, so in other words there isn’t a lot of other traffic.

I noticed in my rear-view mirror that a vehicle was in the passing lane going at a high rate of speed. He was quickly gaining on me. Within seconds, I noticed the vehicle was drifting into my lane.

At his speed, he was going to rear end my vehicle very quickly. I started hitting my gas pedal to speed up and began honking my horn.

The guy finally backed off and soon fell far behind me.

Within minutes, he was speeding again and going to pass me. He stayed in his lane and went on by.

He was the only other vehicle I could see. After he passed, he must not have continued speeding at such a high rate of speed because he stayed in my vision for a while.

Soon, his car drifted off to the right of the road. He had to be driving right on the rumble strip, but he didn’t move. He went for quite a distance driving on the side of the road.

I grabbed my cell phone and started speeding up. By now, I realized there was something seriously wrong with the guy. I planned to get close enough to get a license plate number and call him in. The way he was going, he was going to end up killing someone.

Before I could catch him, the guy exited into a rest area. I considered following him, but I didn’t want to confront him. I drove on by hoping that the guy was going to take care of his problem. I’m not sure if he was drunk (it was around 7 a.m.) or if he was just falling asleep at the wheel.

For the rest of the drive to school, I listened to my story; I also kept a close eye on my rear-view mirror wondering if I was going to once again be put in danger by the reckless driver.

Fat Friday: A Breakthrough

It has been a long 11 days. I have stepped on the scale almost each of those 11 days, and I haven’t been able to record a loss. That’s frustrating.

Even worse, on some of those days my weight went up. It didn’t go up much, but when you are trying to lose weight any bit of movement in the wrong direction is frustrating. I went up to 218 and somewhere in there was a day where I was back at 215, but it went up again to 217.

Yesterday, I finally saw 215 again, and today, I was able to record a two pound loss. I am officially at 213 and hopefully no longer in a stall. Woohoo!

Net Carbs are Nasty Things

So what do I think was behind my stall? Consuming carbs. I am now free to try any food, and I seemed to gain weight the day after I tried even a small amount of carbs. I also learned that food I didn’t realize was high in carbs (like Carnation Instant Breakfast). Once I was able to get my intake below 50 again, the weight once again started coming off.

I also learned about net carbs. I bought a couple of boxes of Atkins protein bars, so I would have a healthy snack when I was on the run and short on time.

(I’ve found that sometimes an hour just isn’t long enough to mix up a protein soup, get the protein to dissolve and eat it while still allowing for about a 10 minute walk to class.)

Back to net carbs, so I purchased the Atkins protein bars and made sure to read the labels. Except I didn’t read the RIGHT label. I relied on the summary on the front of the box. It proclaimed 6 grams of protein with 1 gram of sugar and only 3 grams of net carbs. Great. It was perfect.

Last Wednesday, I ate my protein bar for lunch and then went to record my food into www.myfitnesspal.com. When I reviewed my overall stats, my carbs were a lot higher than I expected. The database was saying that my protein bar actually had 18 grams of carbs and not 3 grams like I thought. Ggrrr.

I will have to put off the protein bars a bit longer, and I will do a lot better job of checking out the actual nutrition label rather than just what the box says.

Coffee
Yesterday, I drank my first cup of coffee since July. I had trouble sleeping, and when it was finally time to get up I needed the caffeine boost. I was a bit worried it would make my stomach upset, but it didn’t.

The coffee was nice, and I’m glad it is an option although I don’t want to make it an everyday habit again. I enjoy having coffee with my husband on the mornings we are able to spend together, so I’m glad we will be doing that again.

Exercise
Now that it has been two months since my surgery, I no longer have any restrictions on what I do. To celebrate that, I bought a stability ball. I’ve found it is a great exercise tool, and I am enjoying working out with it. I have also increased my walking and am considering joining a Zumba class or gym.

I am a bit hesitant about joining a gym because I don’t know which gym to join.

Here are my options:

  • The best financial option is to join the university’s gym, but I don’t have time to workout when I am there, and it is too far to drive when I’m not working (over an hour one way). I’d love to exercise in the morning before class, but my first class is 8 a.m., and I am already leaving my house shortly after 6 a.m. If I left earlier, I wouldn’t see my kids at all on those mornings.
  • The closest option is Curves in Lake City. The hours it is open seem to be limited. For instance, it isn’t open after 7 p.m. It is about 10 miles away, but I don’t live in Lake City. I do all of my life stuff in Houghton Lake.
  • The Curves in Houghton Lake is almost 25 miles away. There are also two gyms in Houghton Lake including one that has a 24/7 option, but again the distance is about 20 some miles. I think I would be more likely to use the facility if it was close to my home, but I am in Houghton Lake a lot. Plus when I am in Houghton Lake, I usually have an hour or so to kill because I am waiting for children at various activities. For instance, Justin has football practice 3 days a week, so I could go to the gym during his 1.5 hour practice. I just don’t know if I would go enough to warrant a membership but too frequently for the day passes.

So I am holding off making any decisions about the gym. In the meantime, I’m filling in with workout DVDs, active video games that get me up and moving and sweating as well as working out with my stability ball and walking. Plus, I use 3-pound hand weights for some of the workouts.

Monday, I meet with a personal trainer, and I am looking forward to her helping me establish a routine, goals and some advice on my thoughts about gym choices.

My Incredible Shrinking Body

I have lost over 30 inches from various body parts including about 8 inches from my butt/hip area. It is amazing how my body is transforming. The first thing I’ve noticed is that my butt and thighs are shrinking.

I was also dismayed to find that bat wings have already started appearing on my arms. At my heaviest weights, my arms were 14 inches. They are now about an inch and a half smaller. I didn’t think they were that big to begin with, and they haven’t lost much, but the lower part of my upper arm is already drooping a bit. The batwings just appeared last week, and they were not welcome when I was already in the middle of a stall. To combat them, I am doing a lot of upper body exercises including weight-lifting that specifically targets that area.

Other body changes include my hair. When I looked at my photo taken from behind the night before surgery and compare it to the photo taken from behind two months later, I noticed there was much less hair. It was not looking good. I had already known I was losing some hair because it was showing up in my sink when I stood in front of it to brush my hair. I was just dismayed to see that the loss was so visible.

I have THICK hair. Hair so thick that I have never gone to a hair appointment without a hair dresser commenting on how much hair I have. Thick. So I have hair to spare, but I am still worried about this. I did get my hair cut to about shoulder-length to clean up the raggedy ends and hide some of the most obvious loss.

To be clear, while I can tell I’ve lost hair, my hairstylist assures me that it is only noticeable to her and to me. She said I still have plenty of hair. Let’s hope it stays that way.

Thanks for playing.
