Portable Work Load

officeI have to start work today at 11 a.m., and my oldest daughter has an orthodontist appointment in Grayling at 10:45 a.m. I am the only one available to take her. How do I do it without missing work?

It involves a complicated series of public services and private resources. Luckily, I am no longer stuck in my office just off my living room. I can work from anywhere (theoretically) thanks to the wireless internet on my laptop. Today, I am putting it to the test.

I arrived in Grayling about 45 minutes before Autumn’s appointment. I dropped her off with her dad’s cell phone, 50 cents in change and the number for a service my own county doesn’t have — dial-a-ride. Autumn has never rode a dial-a-ride before, and I think she needs the experience. I did warn her that the nickname for dial-a-ride is dial-a-tour. I doubt that has changed. Heck, even the phone number is the same from when I was a kid. I still had it memorized!

After getting her all set up at the orthodontist, I drove to Grayling’s public library. I was pretty sure the library had wireless, and if it didn’t, I thought I could just use one of the library’s public access computers. I hoped it would all work.

Bingo. The library has wireless, and I am currently sitting in a pretty comfortable chair in the fly-fishing section of the library. What’s that? What do you mean your library doesn’t have a fly fishing section? This one does. It includes fishing poles, nets, pretty detailed drawings and examples of tons of flies. After all, this is Crawford County, which is home to the start of the AuSable River, which is a premier place for fly fishing although to me, it brings back memories of canoeing.

Anyway, there is a nice little corner of the library that has comfy chairs and a table and is close to a plug in, so I am there. I’ve already checked, and I can connect. The library’s internet access seems to be much faster than Houghton Lake Library’s internet access.

I start working in about a half hour. It should go well. I am pretty happy about it. I only need to be online for a couple of hours, and I can then return home.

I have two summer jobs right now, and both are working online. I am teaching creative writing for Baker Online, which offers me flexibility. I have some deadlines I must meet, but overall, it is pretty flexible about when I log on. My other job, however, requires me to be online for specific times, and when I am working, I am on a clock, so I don’t have any flexibility once I’ve selected my hours. That job is tutoring for Smarthinking.

Next week, when my family is on vacation, I will continue to work for Baker, but I’ve taken the days off from Smarthinking. I didn’t want to be sitting in my camper or somewhere hooked up to the internet when my family was off in a boat or taking a nap.

And isn’t it amazing that I can have a job that allows me to work from home without being self-employed? Ideally, my preferred mix is getting some face-to-face time with students too, but in the summer, I like the freedom online employment brings me.

I'm sleeping!

lindamiibodyBetween a conference and a vacation, I haven’t been able to use my Wii Fit very much this month. It has been over a week since I logged in, and for the first time since I started using Wii Fit, my Mii is sleeping as it stands in the Wii Plaza.

My Mii might be sleeping, but I have been pretty good about working out. I did a lot of walking while I was at my conference, and I continued to do my podcasting intervals. I had planned to do week 1 just twice, but my oldest daughter wants to get started, so I will probably do week 1 again this week so she and I can do it together.

After this week, I plan to continue through the weeks normally. We’ll see how it goes.

Summer and warm weather has finally arrived, so I am able to do my walking/running outside instead of on the treadmill, and I really enjoy it more. I also realized I need to take longer strides when I run.

And as soon as I get the oldest off my Wii, I plan to wake up my Mii.

Only so much

Tonight if all goes well, I will sleep in my own bed. It has not happened in more than a week. There will only be a couple of nights at home before I am once again not sleeping in my bed.

The hardest part was the last two days I was without internet. It wasn’t intentional. I just could not get my wireless to work. I wasn’t home, and it didn’t want to connect anywhere. It was a pain, and I missed being able to get online. Now I am behind on work and fun.

Plus one of my friends, Michelle, tipped me off on this cool website that has a game right up my alley — typeracer.com

I have an earworm

and I want to share!

I spent this past week at Crossroad’s Writing Project’s Advanced Institute for Technology. This means I spent a good amount of time researching technology by testing out how Facebook and YouTube works. Oh wait, isn’t that how I normally spend my time?

Hey you in the backrow, be quiet!

Anywho, while I was diligently research online discussion forums, Maureen found this great video at YouTube, and I have now watched it so many times (because I have to keep sharing it with people), I know the lyrics by heart, and they will not leave my head!

I tried to watch the regular version of the song, but it didn’t work. I could still only hear the lyrics from the parody version. I wish I could download it to my MP3 player. It is good.

And so I will share it with you! If I’m going to have an earworm, I don’t want to be all alone.

The original is “The Way I Are” by Timbaland

The original doesn’t even compare to the parody by James at War: Bad Grammar with a cameo by HotForWords.

You are welcome.

Buying a Digital Camera

Trying to figure out what digital camera to buy can be overwhelming. The best way to begin figuring out what kind of camera to buy is to figure out what it is you want to do with the camera.
