Missing: 1 Tennis Shoe

tennisshoeliOver the past year, I have not been the best person about sticking to an exercise routine. Needless to say, I could not tell you without looking whether my tennis shoes are Nikes, Reeboks or Addidas. If I had to guess, I would say Reebok, but I do not KNOW. (Update: I actually took a photo of the shoe I can still find, and it is a Reebok. I am a good guesser.)

I should know what brand my tennis shoes are, don’t you think? If I had been exercising like I should be exercising, I would know. In fact, I might have even had to replace the worn out things.

My tennis shoes, however, are not worn out. In fact, when I put them on last week, and my husband saw them, he said, “I see you bought some new shoes.”

I’m not sure he believed me when I said they weren’t new. In fact, they were the exact same shoes I wore when I went on morning walks with him last summer.

Digression: It is hard, by the way, to go on morning walks with your husband when it is 1) snowing outside and 2) he gets up before the crack of dawn and actually leaves for work before daylight even after Daylight Savings Time starts. End Digression.

In the last week, I have been making up for the year of not wearing my tennis shoes. I have been wearing them, and I have been using them while I exercise. It is ground-breaking, obviously.

Yesterday, I went to put on my tennis shoes so I could exercise, and I couldn’t find both tennis shoes. I looked everywhere, but I was only able to find one. There aren’t that many places shoes could hide in my house, so I am not sure how to explain the missing shoe.

Perhaps, the missing tennis shoe is protesting the amount of work I am requiring of it after a year-long vacation in my closet.

The only other explanation I have is that my subconscious has something to do with the missing shoe, and I must have been sleepwalking this week and buried it in the yard or some such thing.

If I don’t find the second shoe soon, I might have to break down and buy new shoes. I might as well — Steve thinks I’ve already done it anyway.

In my search for my missing shoe, I mentioned it was missing to my husband. He was very helpful in searching for the missing shoe; he confessed, “I ate it.” Alas, I’m not sure I believe him.

Countdown to a Better U (me!)

The 12-week American Heart Association program, Better U, begins June 1, and I wanted to talk a bit about my pitfalls that I am going to try to avoid during the next 12 weeks. Half the battle is admitting you have a problem, right?

1. The Weekends– I tend to socialize a lot on the weekends. This usually means at least one (possibly two) dinners out, at least one breakfast out plus big breakfasts at home, alchohol (at 110 calories a bottle), and a tendency to not eat well in between meals out. The activities I engage in during the winter are also not good for exercising (mostly playing cards). In the summer, we are more active.

2. Choices — I don’t eat a lot of junk food. I don’t have cravings for chocolate or chips or sugary snacks. In fact, I usually don’t like things that are real sweet like fudge or cheesecake. My choices usually appear to be healthy — like nuts, trail mixes or dried fruit, but looks can be deceiving. There are a lot of calories in things like dried fruit. I need to make sure I am making smarter decisions about what I snack on.

3. Pop — I like the convience of pop. I like being able to reach into the fridge and pull out a cold drink. I don’t buy pop to keep in my fridge, but I do buy pop at gas stations and/or restaurants. Right now, I am choosing diet pop over regular, which is a plus, but I really need to eliminate pop all together. I like flavored water (the kind without calories) and sugar-free Powerade. I need to make these choices more often, and I need to make it more convenient for me to drink water at home without always resorting to water bottles.

4. Fried foods — I eat a lot of fried foods, and I really should limit this more.

5. Not sticking to exercising — I have in the past tried to start exercising, but I don’t stick with it in the long run. I am trying to change this. I have been actively exercising for the last month now, and I am adding to my abilities.

6. Eating — I don’t eat at regular intervals, and I frequently eat too late or there is too much time in between meals. I need to quit skipping breakfast, and I need to make sure my lunch is closer to lunch time. I need to eat all of my meals earlier in the day.

Things I do well:

1. No salt. I don’t use salt. I don’t add it to my food, and I rarely use it when I cook. I think I get enough salt through food without adding any extra.

I can’t think of anything else.

Retreat!

I am leaving in a little over four hours to go on a weekend retreat with 5 other women. It is a “web presence” retreat where we will work on the website for Ferris’ Crossroads Writing Project. It should be pretty fun, but it will be a lot of work as well. I am taking my laptop, so I will probably be online off and on throughout the weekend.

It has been a rainy week here in Michigan, and most Little League games continue on. Yesterday, Autumn and Amanda played ball in Rose City, which is about an hour drive from our home. We arrived back home around 9:40 p.m. The kid went right to sleep though, so they didn’t have any problems waking up this morning. I think all four of them were tired out.

There are just 5 days left of school for the kids.

My mom keeps trying to get me to commit to some events happening in June. I already have enough of my own events going on in June (including another retreat!), and I am being hesitant about committing to anything else. There is one thing I’d like to go to (my aunt and uncle are celebrating their 50th anniversary June 20), but I thought it was on a Sunday, which I can do, but it is on a Saturday, so I’m not sure.

The following weekend is the 75th Morey Reunion, but it is also the time we are going on vacation. I don’t think I’ll make it to the reunion, but my mom might end up taking the kids (or at least some of them). Then July 5, Amanda goes to camp.

May is quickly coming to an end, and it looks like June will be just as busy. It is a good thing that I am starting out with a retreat! I plan to have fun and laugh a lot. ;-)
