I Stink!

I’ve worked out for 50 minutes today including about 10 minutes of running, 10 minutes of boxing and  another 10 minutes of step aerobics. The results of all that exercise means I have some very strong body odor going on right now. As soon as I finish writing this, I plan to jump in the shower.

This smelly result is one of the reasons why I have put off working out so much in the past. I have a busy schedule, and it keeps me on the run. I know that I should make time to work out, but it is hard to fit in a work out plus the shower and dressing that happens afterwards. I can find time to work out for 30 minutes, but I can’t find time to work out for 30 minutes and then add another 30 minutes to shower and dress.

It seems to me that the best time to do a workout is in the morning before getting dressed for the day. It means I only need one shower a day. It makes sense, but mornings are busy, and I have to keep tabs on the kids or they won’t get ready on time.  When I’ve tried this in the past, I end up in the shower all soapy while hearing kids yelling and screaming at each other on the other side of the bathroom door.

Evenings are usually filled with running around picking up kids from various events and trying to find time to make dinner. Before I know it, the day is over and the time for exercise is gone.

But this month, I am working from home, so I have been doing my workouts right after the kids leave for school in the morning (around 7 a.m.). Although my workouts last at least a half hour to an hour, I find that the workouts are actually taking up an hour to two hours of my day (double the actual workout) because of the time it takes to prepare for workout and then clean up afterwards. It is a good thing that I am sweating when I work out in terms of results, but it means a workout takes more time out of my day.

Today, I am battling a cold, so my workout started later (9:30 a.m.). I worked out for an hour, but it is now 10:30, and I still haven’t taken a shower for the day.

Today, I did something I’ve only done once before — I added running into my routine. I don’t like to run, but I like the results running brings in terms of calories burned. I plan to continue to run, and I hope the results will show.

I think I need the sweat and smell to show that I’ve done a good job of working out, but I wish I could get some of the benefits without taking up so much of my day.
