Political Ponderings

If you thought this was going to be about the U.S. presidential election, you’re going to be disappointed. Although I did talk to two of Nader’s Corporate Crimebusters yesterday. But this is about a much more important election….

President/Vice President of Merritt Elementary School!

Pretty much the whole fifth grade was on the ballot for the primary election. After careful voting by third, fourth and fifth graders two candidates were chosen and their running mates. Both presidential candidates are male and their vice-president candidates are female. And one of those live in my house.

Autumn is running for vice-president and so is one of her best friends. I hear tell the opposition is promising to bring pop machines to the school and I can’t help but label that as a political campaign promise that won’t be kept. If it were only so easy to identify promises not kept in the national elections….

But I digress.

Last night I noticed that there was a light on in the girls’ bedroom after they were supposed to be in bed sleeping. Rather than yell upstairs, I creeped upstairs and caught them scurrying back into bed. The stairs, alas, are NOT creak free and the kids are getting older. Still I saw Amanda jump into her bed and they didn’t have time to turn off the lights. Amanda immediately pretended to be asleep.

Turns out Maxine and Amanda were up and busy working making campaign signs. How sweet I thought as I drew nearer only to read “Vote for Kyle.”

I double checked, but I’m pretty sure k-y-l-e doesn’t spell Adam, which is Autumn’s running mate. They were making poster for the opposition! Not to mention they were doing it after bedtime.

I confiscated all the posters and let them know they would not be taking them to school because they were made illicitely. (spelling optional, remember?) I also mentioned I was extremely disappointed they weren’t supporting their sister. Family bond remember? Blood is thicker than water. All that stuff.

The next morning (this morning) I got onto my computer and quickly designed and printed out several posters saying things like “Vote for Adam and Autumn.” My husband expressed surprise that I make a living as a writer after reading my campaign slogan “Sure Would vote for Adam Frey and Autumn Sherwood!”

“Did you get it, Dad?” Autumn asked him. “I wonder if Adam will get it? Mom, I bet you got that idea from your pen!” (The pen being the great one that I got from Sheri ‘Little Life’ Guyse.)

OK, so Amanda wandered in and apologized for staying up past bedtime to make signs for the opposition. I clarified that she could vote for whoever she wanted to vote, but publically she’d support her sister. Maxine wanted to know if that meant she should make signs for Autumn. I said she didn’t have to make signs for her, but that she won’t be making signs for the other side.

Justin brought out the sign he had made. In huge kindergarten-written letters it is a plain pencil sign on lined paper and says in huge letters on two lines something like:

VOTE FORADA
MANDAUTUMN!

Because kindergartners don’t have a lot of experience making posters and to him it’s perfectly OK to break words and run them together like that. Works for me. He’s going to hang it up in his classroom.

Amanda explained that everyone in the entire school says their going to vote for Adam and she’s worried Kyle won’t get any votes. I told her that you never know the outcome of an election until the votes are counted and people can say whatever they want and then do something completely different.

I’m a bit leary about this whole school election thing. Yes, it’s a good lesson in government and such, but also this is a small school and I hope this doesn’t cause any problems long-term.

And in totally unrelated news, I bought all the ingredients to make the “better than sex” cake that I read about in Shirley Jump’s book, The Bride wore Chocolate. Now I just need time.

And I can’t help but wondering if the Nader guys decided to show up and picket the Wal-mart grand opening this morning.

Wednesday Looms

It’s barely Monday and already Wednesday looms. Why is everything happening on Wed?

1. The new Super Walmart opens with a ribbon cutting at 7 a.m. Yeah, this is one reporter that won’t be there. 7a.m.? Geesh.

2. My mom has surgery to remove lymphnodes to see if the cancer is spread.

3. I have to attend a county board meeting.

4. AGK gives her speech.

5. The big home improvement store shop/eat extravaganza.

Not to mention I’m ill. Later.

Home Improvement Nirvana

I’ve been invited to attend the grand opening of a big warehouse-style home improvement store. It will include a discount for any purchases I make. AND it will be catered. Food and home improvement shopping. Nirvana.

I want to get a new six-panel plain white door for the doorway between the garage and the mudroom. I want a new French door for the kitchen onto the deck. And then a few other little things. Very excited about the possibilities. ;)

Belated Birthday Tales

My second-oldest child, Amanda, turned 9 yesterday. Her birthday wish list, in order was a dirt bike, an automatic four-wheeler, a horse, and some ugly $40 cat from Barbie’s new movie that interacts with the movie (sold separately).

Let’s hope she gets a good job in her future to keep her in the style which she dreams.

She got a Fur Real kitten (which meows and moves), the DVD “New York Minute,” two books about horses and the day before her birthday she (and her siblings) got a used dirt bike (50cc). The dirt bike belonged to a cousin (only child, barely 5) and she never rode it because she also has a go-cart(only child, remember?) which she preferred. So we get the dirt bike because my kids will ride it.

Yesterday on Amanda’s birthday the kids were able to ride the dirt bike for the first time. Amanda, who has always been interested in riding dirt bikes and 4-wheelers did the best at shifting. Maxine was second-best. It was so much fun watching all of them ride the bike. They were thrilled.

For the first time ever Justin rode a dirt-bike at the young age of 5. (It’s a short bike.) He was doing pretty good, but he had a bit of a hard time controlling the throttle. He’d putter down to barely nothing and then he’d remember and whoosh he’d take off at top speed. One of those times he ran into the motor home, denting him and the motor home slightly. He also jumped my bicycle, which had been knocked over in the yard.

I was inside the house cooking dinner when the kids rode under the watchful eye of their dad. But I had a great view of the action. The kids would go by and then I’d see Steve run after them. He had such a huge grin on his face as he watched them motor around. Every once in a while he’d look up at me and gesture at me making sure I caught sight of the latest wonder that is our children. Definitely a great moment and I love how even though I was inside making dinner, I was still included in it all.

Amanda had a nice birthday. Although my mom was late arriving. I spoke to her around 5 p.m. and said she should leave right now. She didn’t. She arrived about 8:30 p.m. All of my children were in bed. Yeah. School night, remember? She did see them all, but this morning Justin didn’t recall her being there. But that’s OK, because on Saturday is when we’re going to carve pumpkins, dunk for apples and have cake and ice cream for her birthday. Let’s just hope my mom shows up, right? ;)

Big Spaz, Great Book

Yesterday I went to a big city. I define a big city by a city that actually has an Unnamed Huge Labyrinthine Book Conglomerate. In other words, a book store that sells new (not used) books. I was finally able to buy:
1. Bowling for Soup’s latest CD “Hangover You Don’t Deserve.”
2. Lani Diane Rich’s Time Off for Good Behavior
3. Shirley Jump’s The Bride wore Chocolate
4. Photography magazines.

I haven’t read Shirley’s book yet, so I can’t tell you what I think. But I’ve read Lani’s and I must say that my experience with this book was very similar to what Lani relates in her blog at LiteraryChicks.com. For example, we both went to a Unnamed Huge Labyrinthine Book Conglomerate. It was my first Official in Store Sighting of her new book. Her first book. My friend’s book. I became a big spaz (although it was a quiet spaz attack.)

How come there’s a character named Shelley? Geez. Just call me Bones from now on.

OK, back to my story about buying this book. I had to look for it and found it on the shelf under “R” because Lani Schwalbe is going by her maiden name with this one, right? Right. And I must admit I didn’t witness the UHLBCs doing the evil-corporation-sucking-the-will-to-live-out-of-their-employees thing.

This particular UHLBC had three copies. Three copies. And I was a big spaz. I went to Information Desk Guy and I asked if he minded if I sign his stock. No problem. Just like Lani’s experience IDG didn’t ask for proof that I was Lani Diane Rich, er, Lani Schwalbe, er, um, Leah Something….

Anyway, I didn’t have any problems until I actually went to sign the book. So if you happen to be in Grand Rapids Michigan and you buy a copy of Time Off for Good Behavior with an autograph that says Lani Schwwww that’s crossed off and then it says Lidna and that’s scribbled out so you can barely read it and finally says Lani Diane Rich, well, that’s the book I signed.

I even got the IDG guy to put the “autographed copy” somewhere other than over Lani’s name. Although I prefered the little pink square to the little green square that Lani favors.

As for the book itself, I must say that it is fantastic. Definitely top-quality print job. You can open the book all the way flat AND not only does it not crease or break the spine (hate that) it will stay open (pretty much anyway). Very high quality stuff there. The pages are very smooth and clean. All corners are cut crisply. And after being held open for hours as I devour the book, the cover shuts cleanly. Again, no creases on the outer spine (really hate when that happens).

But I still don’t see why Bone’s daughter wasn’t named Lidna or Linda or heck even Lydia. She is so NOT a Shelley! Geez.

I think the IDG souless-guy began to get suspicious though when I tried to sign Shirley’s books too. Thanks for playing.

*DISCLAIMER: This post contains some fictional parts. People purchasing Lani’s book in a Grand Rapids bookstore don’t have to worry about a fraudulent autograph. I swear, I really did sign her name right the first time. And if Lani doesn’t believe me, she can just come on over here and see for herself. ;)
