About Fat Man's Daughter
Fat Man’s Daughter explores the ways in which I have dealt (generally unsuccessfully or at least obliviously) with the consequences of obesity on my life — both my father’s obesity and my own and my fears about how it will impact my children’s lives.
While this is an online memoir of that exploration, I am also writing a book. The book will not be self-published.
You can read the first chapter by clicking the "On the Brink" link in the navigation bar above.

Exercise
Searching for Solutions I am trying to figure out what I need to do about my ankle. It is stiff and sore, and I am limping more than I’m not limping. This makes it difficult to exercise, and if I’m not exercising, I’m not losing weight.
I broke my ankle in the last days of 1997, and I [...]
Today I completed my second day of Week one in Podcast Intervals. It was harder this time because of my sore muscles.
I had planned to complete this Wednesday, but it turns out Wednesday was nuts. I was working and running children all over the place (mine and other people’s).
I really noticed my ankle today as [...]
Food
Gasping and WheezingI teach on campus two days a week, and my classroom location is a significant hike from my office. Normally, it takes me about 10 minutes to walk there, and a lot of that walking involves a gradual incline.
Today, I was trying to get the walk done a bit quicker than normal. Every since my doctor’s appointment, I have been working hard to do a better job of supporting my ankle. With that in mind, today I wore tennis shoes to work. White Reeboks looks kind of funny with black dress pants, by the way.
A Duh! MomentI keep learning the same lesson over and over — that my food choices are NOT as healthy as I think they are.
I am not one to crave chocolate or ice cream. I have never eaten an entire half gallon of ice cream in a single setting. I don’t tend to have food cravings late [...]

Article worth mentioningBy JEFFREY ZASLOW
One day in January 1986, fourth-grade girls at Marie Murphy School in Wilmette, Ill., were called down to the principal’s office.
A stranger was waiting there to ask each girl a question: “Are you on a diet?”
Most of the girls said they were.
“I just want to be skinny so no one will tease me,” [...]

BetterU
Better U Week 2It is week two of the 12-week Better U challenge, and I am not 2 pounds lighter. I really struggled with motivation this week, and I was a bit disappointed that my month of working out hasn’t ended with better results (ie weight loss).
But I know things have improved. When I began working out a [...]
Today, I feel like I don’t have any energy. I am tired. I have a ton of things I need to do, and I am not motivated to do any of them.
I did exercise this morning including some running. I wanted to do another 10 to 20 minutes on my treadmill, but I haven’t been [...]
Memoir Writing
Public SpeakingLast Saturday, I traveled to Lansing to speak to the Peninsula Writers group about memoir writing. I spoke for about an hour in the morning and then led two writing sessions in the afternoon.
I arrived about 10 minutes before 9 a.m., and I was supposed to speak at 9:30. When I arrived, the other two [...]
On my last trip to the library, I picked up a few books. When my oldest daughter saw my selections, she was a bit surprised. The books were: Fat Girl (a memoir), The Fat Girl (an old YA book from the 80s) and a fiction novel titled Beautiful Bodies.
I have tried to read Beautiful Bodies, and [...]
